Preventative Services
Prophylaxis (dental cleaning): Dental cleanings are important appointments that allow the doctor and hygienist to monitor your child’s oral health. The hygienist will clean and polish the teeth. This helps to promote healthy gums and teeth by removing the plaque that causes decay and gum infection. They will also provide oral hygiene recommendations specifically for your child.
Fluoride Treatments: According to the AAPD, children should be receiving professional fluoride treatments every six months. Historically, fluoride has reduced cavities by 25%- 50%. Under proper care and instruction, fluoride has been proven to be safe and effective. Our office strongly recommends the use of fluoride to prevent cavities and strengthen the enamel. However, if you object to the use of fluoride, please inform our staff, so that we can honor your decision.
Sealants: Sealants protect the chewing surfaces of the back teeth and should be applied as a child’s permanent teeth erupt. We may recommend sealants for the child’s primary teeth as well. The sealants that we have placed have been highly successful in preventing decay.
Mouth Guards: Depending on the types of activities and sports your child plays, our office recommends various mouth guards from over-the-counter to custom-made mouth guards.
